The Last Sunflower

 The Last Sunflower

In the dimness of night’s hour

As stars glimmer in the sky

I looked upon a fading sunflower

Withered brown waiting to die

Yet there was a single precious bloom

Glorious as day light in youth

Impervious to inevitable doom

Defying the reality of autumn’s truth

How long shall the sunflower last

Will it live to see winter’s snow

Before it is but a memory of the past

A pleasure and delight we once did know

Nothing lasts forever

This is commonly said

By poets striving to be clever

Seeking to be read

Yet in the beginning God spoke

Let there be light

And from darkness Glory broke

Eternally our delight

Perhaps the sunflower bright and yellow

Contains the essence of that first morn

A way for God to say a daily hello

For all of creation that has to be born

The wisdom of the sunflower is vast

Not to mention mysteries of the universe

All I know is good things fade far to fast

Like the words of this simple verse

POLISHED FRAGMENTS

Poet To The Poor

Homeless In Suburbia

 Homeless In Suburbia

The preacher says his prayer

With tender care

God bless

All unfortunate homeless

Meanwhile

He lives in lavish style

With the sanctuary

At night, dark and empty

So the masses on the street

Out of garbage cans eat

Or stand in a long line

Simply to dine

They can sleep dormitory style

At least for a little while

If they can stand the crime

Of beating and stealing

It's as bad as doing time

Guilt is a common feeling

But we did nothing wrong

Is a common song

Perhaps they have an addiction

Or circumstances just turned sour

In their darkest hour

But there is a harsh fiction

That there is no place live

Everybody knows

That banks foreclose

As debts they cannot forgive

So there are homes boarded up

More than enough

To house those who wander

Many, many times over

I see

Irony of agony

It is a shame

And there are people to blame

Society does bleed

Because of blatant greed

Noah

 Noah

He’s the fiery skies on the final fourth of July

A soldier of fortune refusing orders to die

Thunder explodes as jet bombers count the cost

Fearing hearing the rhythms of a nuclear holocaust

None other than Noah God’s drummer

A flash of fire in forever’s summer

Playing on garbage cans he’s an overcomer

That’s the man called Noah God’s drummer

Rachel screams “Boy in this life hold fast to your dreams”

I got a book of truth but it ain’t what it seems

Keep on wailing never failing in the fight

Busting trusting in the power of music to set all things right

None other than Noah God’s drummer

A flash of fire in forever’s summer

Playing on garbage cans he’s an overcomer

That’s the man called Noah God’s drummer

Noah is running with the wolves howling at the moon

They’ve been saying the Second Coming’s real soon

And Noah complains that he’s fresh out of rain

Booming consuming God says I got fire and I won’t refrain

None other than Noah God’s drummer

A flash of fire in forever’s summer

Playing on garbage cans he’s an overcomer

That’s the man called Noah God’s drummer

What’ s a boy to do in this crazy mixed-up world

Except join a rock and roll band and love a girl

Keep the beat Noah all eyes are fixed in a gaze

I pray for you child for some better days

Under a raging Moon the good always die too young

There are too many songs that are left unsung

Start with your heart and walk down the straight trail

Tapping rapping if you try and reach high you cannot fail

None other than Noah God’s drummer

A flash of fire in forever’s summer

Playing on garbage cans he’s an overcomer

That’s the man called Noah God’s drummer

Dreams Come True

Dreams Come True

Long ago in troubled times a Korean War

A man who I would come to know as father

In black and white photographs a distant smile

Marching in green uniform grunting survival

Dreams come true but only to the few

Dreams come true what am I to do

Dreams come true I still love you

Dreams come true and baby I’m due

Florence and Ted wed young in the land of promise

In years to come I would never see them kiss

Not once to hear the words I love you such sad shame

I was a small child giving myself the blame

Dreams come true but only to the few

Dreams come true what am I to do

Dreams come true I still love you

Dreams come true and baby I’m due

Rock and Roll fantasy starring Sir Elton John

Banging out Bennie and the Jets so far gone

A freak in a circus show mocked by my peers

In a prison of scorn a dungeon of fears

Dreams come true but only to the few

Dreams come true what am I to do

Dreams come true I still love you

Dreams come true and baby I’m due

Jimi played now he’s laid with a Stratocaster

See his fingers my mind is racing all the faster

If I had only known I could have been a rock star

All day and all night I’d play electric guitar

A cosmic kid lost in a social holocaust

Tormented by the past always counting the cost

I would never surrender I was overcome

A victim of circumstance in God’s kingdom

Dreams come true but only to the few

Dreams come true what am I to do

Dreams come true I still love you

Dreams come true and baby I’m due

Lazy Day Blues (Song #11)

Lazy Day Blues (Song #11)

Took Ventura Boulevard and headed out east

Picked up a hippie preaching about peace

She had some grass to help pass the time

Why is getting high a capital crime?

I got me them crazy lazy day blues

Sunsetting in many magenta hues

I’m a songwriter paying my dues

I got me them crazy lazy day blues

Couldn’t read the speedometer ran out of gas

Wheels spinning in desert sand going nowhere fast

In Arizona we crashed the Hopi dance

We’re all criminals victims of circumstance

I got me them crazy lazy day blues

Sunsetting in many magenta hues

I’m a songwriter paying my dues

I got me them crazy lazy day blues

I was tutoring math but the children revolted

They said I needed a bath and I got insulted

I made a video adding two and two

They say heaven is high why is that true?

I got me them crazy lazy day blues

Sunsetting in many magenta hues

I’m a songwriter paying my dues

I got me them crazy lazy day blues

I would quote Dylan but Guthrie was much better

Some people like Z but W is a finer letter

The words and chords melted in something placid

Uh oh oooh no the grass was laced with acid

I was close to understanding the paradox

Of a million doors with a single lock

I had no paper so it’s all on memory

If you don’t have the key you’ll never be free

I got me them crazy lazy day blues

Sunsetting in many magenta hues

I’m a songwriter paying my dues

I got me them crazy lazy day blues
