It Didn’t Look Like The Sun

It Didn’t Look Like The Sun

I flunked out of poetry school for being a fool

My sonnets were carnal and my allusions cruel

I quoted Shakespeare clearly lacking optimism

The official charge was downright plagiarism

I had a California dream she was blonde and fun

I said there goes the moon it didn’t look like the sun

If beauty were brains she’d be several times undone

She said one and one is three it didn’t look like the sun

A coven of nuclear engineers had a project

My fantasy said “Baby can you share your rocket?”

Satanic engineers drooled over the bigger bang

We’ll dress up in leather and call ourselves a gang

I had a California dream she was blonde and fun

I said there goes the moon it didn’t look like the sun

If beauty were brains she’d be several times undone

She said one and one is three it didn’t look like the sun

Fornication is the celebration of the greater gods

I played the lottery unaware of the sinister odds

In Vegas I won in blackjack and lost it in the brothel

They refused me in heaven and second best was Hell

All the song lyrics Bob Dylan wrote will fade away

When saints are about to faint they learn how to pray

Jack Kerouac hit the sack right around sunrise

She screamed I love you madly but it was only lies

I had a California dream she was blonde and fun

I said there goes the moon it didn’t look like the sun

If beauty were brains she’d be several times undone

She said one and one is three it didn’t look like the sun

I picked Bert to be my secret pseudonym

One day everything will end and then we will begin

I will remember most those who were kind in heart

Living like poetry is the most sacred art

I had a California dream she was blonde and fun

I said there goes the moon it didn’t look like the sun

If beauty were brains she’d be several times undone

She said one and one is three it didn’t look like the sun

Malice And Betrayal In The Hotel Lobby

Malice And Betrayal In The Hotel Lobby

The Sell Outs sold out their show at the Garden

Our promoter was screaming begging for pardon

Roy on the drums was tripping on LSD

The groupies were dancing in glee love was free

Malice and betrayal in the hotel lobby

They demanded we pay before we leave

Such crude rudeness I couldn’t believe

Malice and betrayal in the hotel lobby

We crashed the bar numbering twenty or more

The beer on tap was cold and the cocaine pure

There must have been a narc hiding in the dark

Dogs are really nice but why do they bark?

Malice and betrayal in the hotel lobby

They demanded we pay before we leave

Such crude rudeness I couldn’t believe

Malice and betrayal in the hotel lobby

Our reputation never let the fans down

The hotel manager was one sad seedy clown

Suddenly a swarm of blue crashed like a wave

The lieutenant said now be good boys behave

Malice and betrayal in the hotel lobby

They demanded we pay before we leave

Such crude rudeness I couldn’t believe

Malice and betrayal in the hotel lobby

Well the undercover agent was in her secret guise

A lovely prostitute with sweet lavender eyes

I offered to take her up to my penthouse room

I promised darling you won’t meet your doom

They say money makes the world go round tis true

We had a high price lawyer that the judge knew

Our case was dismissed on a technicality

Know ye the judge and the judge will set you free

Malice and betrayal in the hotel lobby

They demanded we pay before we leave

Such crude rudeness I couldn’t believe

Malice and betrayal in the hotel lobby

Why Is It My Fault

 Why Is It My Fault

Woke up a December morning the sun was shining on you

I tried to remember the evening but it was hard to do

The sanctity of sleep had conquered your face but a smile lingered on

I got dressed in a silent rush and in five minutes I was gone

It’s open to debate but why is it my fault

Caught between love and hate why is it my fault

I ain’t the light of the Earth I ain’t the salt

Can’t we blame God why is it my fault

Santa Claus was ringing his bell for the Salvation Army

He was nipping on the bottle but that fact didn’t alarm me

I tossed in a dollar hoping that it would really go to the poor

I thought of giving you a call but something in me wasn’t sure

It’s open to debate but why is it my fault

Caught between love and hate why is it my fault

I ain’t the light of the Earth I ain’t the salt

Can’t we blame God why is it my fault

There are ten thousand horses stampeding inside my beating heart

I remember your words “Every act of love is an act of art”

Well darling it takes two to tangle and that ain’t no maybe

It’s hard to be happy when you’re weeping over the coming baby

It’s open to debate but why is it my fault

Caught between love and hate why is it my fault

I ain’t the light of the Earth I ain’t the salt

Can’t we blame God why is it my fault

I’m just a part time song writer stuck on the blues

One man’s tragedy another’s good news

I wish the world could be a kinder place

Money honey has hijacked the human race

Your knitting stockings shocking pink and it makes me kinda think

That the night really ain’t black it’s only just a puddle of spilled ink

Alone is a state of mind there are over eight billion down here

With a sigh I accept the lie and reach over to draw you near

It’s open to debate but why is it my fault

Caught between love and hate why is it my fault

I ain’t the light of the Earth I ain’t the salt

Can’t we blame God why is it my fault

Hey Johnny

 Hey Johnny

Everyone who ever strummed the guitar

Everyone who spun the story of a star

Everyone who hitchhiked the magic mile

Hey baby maybe you can still smile?

Hey Johnny can I play you a song

I wrote it when I was young

I sung it my whole life long

Hey Johnny can I play you a song

Hey Mister Johnny you know I can sing

Why are you dreaming of becoming a king?

Hobos take it slow is that coffee hot?

Life’s true blessings so quickly forgot

Hey Johnny can I play you a song

I wrote it when I was young

I sung it my whole life long

Hey Johnny can I play you a song

Johnny Rotten no that’s really not fair

Even the devil himself resorts to prayer

Tell me maybe baby the love has grown?

The best blues guitarists are unknown

Hey Johnny can I play you a song

I wrote it when I was young

I sung it my whole life long

Hey Johnny can I play you a song

Sylvia dreams she has no other choice

I hold her hand tight and share my voice

At fifty-seven you tend to look to heaven

I saw Jesus working at the Seven Eleven

This train rides to glory some of the time

What if I sung this and they hated my rhyme

On to Venus past Jupitar and Mars

Plenty of music in these guitars

Hey Johnny can I play you a song

I wrote it when I was young

I sung it my whole life long

Hey Johnny can I play you a song

A Magic

 A Magic

Early to the store the shelves empty

Saluting the flag but I ain’t free

I see in the east the rising son

One day they say victory won

There’s a magic I lean upon

There’s a magic but it’s gone

The sunshine is currently on

There’s a magic but it’s gone

Tutoring Daniel he makes us laugh

I’m missing kissing my better half

There’s a rabbit hidden in my hat

I’m a wizard my voice is flat

There’s a magic I lean upon

There’s a magic but it’s gone

The sunshine is currently o

There’s a magic but it’s gone

I did it once before but no more

Through the years I fear a money whore

In the mirror I covet the score

It don’t matter in endless war

There’s a magic I lean upon

There’s a magic but it’s gone

The sunshine is currently on

There’s a magic but it’s gone

I got a guitar but all the strings are broken

They say Hey mister you must be jokin’

I got to the chorus before they revolted

I wasn’t hurt but I sure was insulted

These lyrics ain’t good they ain’t that bad

Sometimes we’re happy sometimes we’re sad

When did I begin to speak in plural

Use spray paint to make my mural

There’s a magic I lean upon

There’s a magic but it’s gone

The sunshine is currently on

There’s a magic but it’s gone

Just One More Song

 Just One More Song

You used to call me up to say I love you

A child of abuse my choices were few

Having somebody seemed impossible

And you Syliva were my miracle

Just one more song on the radio

Just one more dance nice and slow

I am so sorry you have to go

Juist one more song on the radio

Remember when you cooked me lobster and shrimp

Barbara said you wanted me it was a hint

Now I feed you lunch the food all puree

Heaven tomorrow the devil today

Just one more song on the radio

Just one more dance nice and slow

I am so sorry you have to go

Juist one more song on the radio

I see pictures of fantasy preacher fuming lies

God in his grand glory as Earth slowly dies

Scumbag landlord evicted me illegally

When I go I’m bringing the whole place down with me

Revelation the final chapter of the book

Go to the gospels for a better look

First was the water next time it’s the fire

Angels can do more than sing in the choir

Just one more song on the radio

Just one more dance nice and slow

I am so sorry you have to go

Juist one more song on the radio

Not with a whimper baby but a big bang

Gonna tell it plain I ain’t using slang

Purple haze these eyes have seen better days

It all makes sense when in a manic craze

Just one more song on the radio

Just one more dance nice and slow

I am so sorry you have to go

Juist one more song on the radio

A Woodstock Refugee

 A Woodstock Refugee

Hitchhiked the golden highway to a faraway time

Moving grooving to the beat of a radical rhyme

We could have changed the world our love was strong

Oh hold on my darling it won’t be very long

I am a Woodstock refugee yearning to be free

A Woodstock refugee music is turning the key

I am a Woodstock refugee yearning to be free

A Woodstock refugee hope is burning in me

Our heart was the art we know our part deep in our soul

Peace Love and Understanding they were our unwavering goal

Against ground control we all revolted

Stay in line bow to the divine we were insulted

I am a Woodstock refugee yearning to be free

A Woodstock refugee music is turning the key

I am a Woodstock refugee yearning to be free

A Woodstock refugee hope is burning in me

We look at our children’s children with a deep blue sigh

We laugh at the evening news we know it’s all a lie

Echoing in the night in fright they cry

Try as they might they’ll never tell you the reason why

I am a Woodstock refugee yearning to be free

A Woodstock refugee music is turning the key

I am a Woodstock refugee yearning to be free

A Woodstock refugee hope is burning in me

Sylvia is perishing lamenting in the long goodbye

Love is eternal dreams can never die

The tomb is empty Oh yes Lord I believe

Reap what you sow as you give receive

Today humble poets are seeking as they create

Our leaders stumble speaking their wicked words of hate

Shatter the chains lets move to better days

Confessing our faith we’re baptized in a Purple Haze

I am a Woodstock refugee yearning to be free

A Woodstock refugee music is turning the key

I am a Woodstock refugee yearning to be free

A Woodstock refugee hope is burning in me

Dreams Come True

Dreams Come True

Long ago in troubled times a Korean War

A man who I would come to know as father

In black and white photographs a distant smile

Marching in green uniform grunting survival

Dreams come true but only to the few

Dreams come true what am I to do

Dreams come true I still love you

Dreams come true and baby I’m due

Florence and Ted wed young in the land of promise

In years to come I would never see them kiss

Not once to hear the words I love you such sad shame

I was a small child giving myself the blame

Dreams come true but only to the few

Dreams come true what am I to do

Dreams come true I still love you

Dreams come true and baby I’m due

Rock and Roll fantasy starring Sir Elton John

Banging out Bennie and the Jets so far gone

A freak in a circus show mocked by my peers

In a prison of scorn a dungeon of fears

Dreams come true but only to the few

Dreams come true what am I to do

Dreams come true I still love you

Dreams come true and baby I’m due

Jimi played now he’s laid with a Stratocaster

See his fingers my mind is racing all the faster

If I had only known I could have been a rock star

All day and all night I’d play electric guitar

A cosmic kid lost in a social holocaust

Tormented by the past always counting the cost

I would never surrender I was overcome

A victim of circumstance in God’s kingdom

Dreams come true but only to the few

Dreams come true what am I to do

Dreams come true I still love you

Dreams come true and baby I’m due

Bombs Are Falling On Berlin

 Bombs Are Falling On Berlin

Flower children have grown up they are no more

Gotta make a living in Babylon the Whore

Size of your IRA well that’s the score

Bow to the golden calf the masters of war

The bombs are falling on Berlin

Here we go again war is sin

We didn’t learn our lesson way back when

The bombs are falling on Berlin

Pain in Ukraine soldiers are dying in vain

It’s the wicked deed of greed need I explain

Jesus Christ groans they’re killing in His name

Thanks to the banks for playing this evil game

The bombs are falling on Berlin

Here we go again war is sin

We didn’t learn our lesson way back when

The bombs are falling on Berlin

We’re choosing sides there’s nobody you can trust

The primaeval urge the eternal blood lust

Meanwhile our prisons are bursting the seam

Say hey tell me again about the American dream

The bombs are falling on Berlin

Here we go again war is sin

We didn’t learn our lesson way back when

The bombs are falling on Berlin

The Dakota shaman walks the plains of snow

He’s searching for the white buffalo

Manifest Destiny taught in Florida’s school

They’re saying slavery wasn’t that cruel

Pop stars dream of pop songs the top of the chart

An empty brain a dollar sign for a heart

The ghost of Woodie Guthrie sings a lament

Peace will come only with God’s kingdom repent

The bombs are falling on Berlin

Here we go again war is sin

We didn’t learn our lesson way back when

The bombs are falling on Berlin

Joni

 Joni

Harvest moons in endless Junes

Releasing balloons singing tunes

Blonde lady strumming her guitar

I wonder now just where you are?

Are you lonely Joni

If only if only

I could touch you with grace

And teach the human race

Songs of love from above

Are you lonely Joni

Night is a time full of glowing stars

Playing in small theatres and smoky bars

Yesterday has passed with a smile

But please allow me a little while

Are you lonely Joni

If only if only

I could touch you with grace

And teach the human race

Songs of love from above

Are you lonely Joni

Buffy was cool as a general rule

In the fall the weather turns cool

I am seeking what is beyond this

Say hello to the snow with a tender kiss

Are you lonely Joni

If only if only

I could touch you with grace

And teach the human race

Songs of love from above

Are you lonely Joni

The Legacy

The Legacy

By John Kaniecki

I saw the scarecrow front seat at the rock and roll show

It’s not who you are it’s a matter of who you know

Joe Hill tuned into groovy groves of Jesus of Nazareth

A martyr in Utah he kept the faith until his death

Convicted by a jury of peers based on fabricated lies

His final words of wisdom “Don’t mourn organize”

Somewhere in the Oklahoma prairies Woody caught the breath

We had to defeat Nazi Germany a victory to be won

But in the end friend fascism was far from done

So, Peter came with mild fame painted in red shame

Eugene McCarthy played his silly Satanic game

Silencing by choice any voice in the land of the free

We can see the outer limits but not our own hypocrisy

In Graystone U. the venerable saint wasted away

The young dreamers bowed to the idol of the day

Zimmerman had a plan and thus the torch passed

He had the zeal but the money was the real deal

Hey I can play, but love goes beyond what you feel

And so, we sacrificed the spirit of seventeen seventy-six

At the Newport Folk Festival while going electric

So, the Master Pimp prostituted his clever verse

The divine line so fine between blessing and curse

Understand cash in hand feels mighty grand

The number one rule of being cool is playing with the Band

But Joe looks down from the Rocky Mountain high

As evangelicals scorn salvation and we slowly die

But don’t worry son the stock market went bull

Who cares who we kill capitalism by nature is cruel

There’s an American dream but it’s not my prayer

Hit the score, fuck the whore, is there something more

To life?

I went to the nursing home tonight the visit my wife

Must I mention dementia is such a horrid plight?

We are a nation of winners accepting sinners

All that matters is being on top, rule one to beginners

So, if you’re down in the Super Bowl after the long haul

It doesn’t really matter if you deflate the football

Whatever happened to going out and having some fun?

Or enjoying some exercise in the glorious sun?

While in unceded lands in Grandma’s northwest

They’re raping Mother Earth thanks to greed’s eternal quest

And where are the pop stars as we slowly die?

How come Mister Bob Dylan doesn’t give a cry?

Joe Hill would be on the picket line raising righteous hell

Woody Guthrie would have some rambling story to tell

Pete Seeger would be strumming his banjo overtime

And COVID just kill Anne Feeney such a crime

Slowly the suckers awake boys we’ve been played

But Bob got some blonde big breasted bimbo to get laid

And good old Neil knows the deal divorcing his wife

The two shall become one until the selfish cutting knife

God gave talents to one five, to the next two to the final one

So good sir I humbly ask at your task what have you done?

Selfish seekers with expensive sneakers scared in place

Don’t you know all that you possess is by grace?

In the trenches hear the lamentable scream

In Yemen nine million slowly starve in genocide

Excuse me sir, don’t let me spoil your rock and roll dream

Or impinge on your most honorable pride

I might not be the cleverest rhymer on the block

But I ain’t going to kneel down and suck the devil’s cock

You’re still a prostitute no matter what the price

And all the fans saying you’re the man and this ain’t nice

But truth ain’t naked it’s wrapped in an American flag

So, with a touch of obscurity, I declare you’re it, tag

Cause you see the legacy is supposed to be yours

Could you just please speak out against endless wars?

I mourn with Joe Hill he was a man of the people

While Joel Osteen builds himself a solid gold steeple

“You will eat, bye and bye”

“In the glorious land in the sky”

“Work and pray, live on hay”

“You’ll get pie in the sky when you die”

Money is a fictitious number on the computer screen

And James Johnson just died, do you dig the scene?

In death the rich and poor are identically the same

And God, good sir, counts score in His game

And I look at the sky gray, as if stained by ink

I go to the rivers, so foul I cannot drink

I see mountains of plastic floating in the ocean

While pop stars with gold guitars bow in devotion

To the god of mammon

In Yemen there’s famine

Yes, I know I said it before

I just hate to be defeated

And some things are worth being repeated

The legacy, why it’s nothing but serving the highest call

That is all

Answering The King Of Fools

Answering The King Of Fools

By John Kaniecki

There you go singing your sad song
About God in glory and all that went wrong
In the middle of the end of all
You send out your sweet bird call
The hawks are circling with the doves
And you’re the one everybody loves
Lookie here Bob’s got another rhyme
Trying once more to define the time
Say in all your searching for salvation
Have you ever reached you destination?
Once you held Jesus as savior and Lord
But you have traded in your sweet reward
I got treasures in heaven piling high
I suggest humility sir give it a good try
I think back to our friend Woody Guthrie
Singing with Peter Seeger wild and free
When in living red the truth was said
And for freedom’s cause blood was shed
Seems like the world has taken a great loss
Cause Zimmy looks like you dropped your cross
Now is not the time to be lukewarm
These are but the whisks of the coming storm
You’ve never heard of me you don’t know my name
But I live in all men’s hearts just the same
How could you look at this world of pain
And not understand that God went insane
Hypocrite, do you know the definition brother?
It’s saying one thing and doing another
That about includes all but the Chosen Few
They ain’t on cable t.v. you know that’s true
If you want to be perfect give all to the poor
Love your enemy that means no war
I went to heaven once it was mighty grand
I saw things that nobody could understand
He who weeps shall reap joy in tomorrow
God knows we had an ample share of sorrow
So I am reaching out you’ll hear it in your mind
See what I see says the man who was born blind
I’ve known great hatred but it made me kind
We’re marching ahead leaving none behind
Pretty soon some of us are learning a new song
That’ll happen after everything goes wrong
By then I’ll be gone to my home in the sky
Love is the answer I suggest you give it a try
And don’t lean on Neil he’s a broken staff
But he’s better than the rest at least half a laugh
Alas the river is meandering and flowing slow
Have I said anything you don’t already know?
Forsake your idols clever creations of gold
Refuse to obey just don’t do as you are told
Release the songs you hide in your black book
It’s time for the Revelation take a deep look
Our enemy is only found inside of the mind
The best cure is common decency and being kind
Truly minstrel of madness be more forgiving
Some of down here have to work for a living
I learned to embrace my deep and dark fears
While stocking the paints on the shelves of Sears
The prophets are all shot up with Thorazine
Can you be honest can you speak to me clean?
What have you heard and what have you seen?
I not trying to cause a ruckus or some scene
Now I’m sitting here waiting for the invitation
Let’s pop the corks on the bottles of celebration

Round and round
The merry-go-round
In the abundance of words
No truth is found

Once you were young full of dreams and hopes
Now you sing before the kings and the popes
Do you do it for money; do you do it for fame?
Do you have some scapegoat to cast the blame?
You may be a giant standing tallest of the tall
But compared to my Jesus you are nothing at all
Save precious and special in His wonderful eyes
But we’ve come full circle and back to your lies
In the future your clever words will be cliché
Just like every dog seems to have their day
I could write these words of indefinite length
My fingers are fresh and my spirit far from faint
But Bennet needs me to work and earn my pay
Regardless I said the words that I happened to say
Don’t be angry with me and please don’t be sore
You’re an enigma and this poem a metaphor
If you happened to knock for entrance on my door
You would just be like those who came before
But please stay away in your galaxy of stars
In a world where they sing and play guitars
I seek not fortune I seek not a measure of fame
I have no desire for the fire known as the game
Cause I have come the learn the flame will burn
You do what you want that is not my concern
It was not I who wrote these complex rules
All this is, is Answering The King Of Fools
