Mulatto Queen

Mulatto Queen

Loveliest thing you've ever seen

Sweet, sweet mulatto queen

A woman caught in between

In a harsh solitary scene

For she is far from white

A disgrace in proper society's sight

Nor is she kin

To those of darker skin

For though she is a slave as well

She is favored, all can tell

Master with his lustful ways

Lavishes her with endless praise

Her teary blue eyes

Always tell

The living hell

When she is made to compromise

Life is a complicated

Never loved, constantly hated

Unsure where to dwell

Always made to sell

If she refuses to stay in line

Master will retaliate

If she makes things fine

It is something she does hate

A mistress to a married man

Without a voice

Without a choice

She does the best she can

Only happy when she's in a dream

Mulatto queen

Mammy

 Mammy

Mother wasn’t always old

Wide eyed children aglow

How could they know

Unless they are told

Husshhhhhh and listen

To our wisdom

See Momma’s face dark as night

Your skin paler, more white

You see momma was once a slave

She had to behave

Or the mastah would kill

Either way

They say

He would have his will

Victorian queen frigid as snow

It won’t hurt what she don’t know

Besides why would the princess care

If she was aware

The fine Methodist preacher does declare

Africans are animals in despair

So mastah having a little fun

Wouldn’t hurt anyone

And if Mommy would speak

Mastah wouldn’t turn the other cheek

Death on the whipping post

A deed most

Cruel

But to those that rule

At that time

It wasn’t even a crime

So momma didn’t even utter a single breath

For fear of death

She just laid it upon God on high

In a silent cry

Why God, oh why?!!?

The torture and pain

The guilt driving her insane

A dirty feeling never to be clean

His curses cold his compliments obscene

The sick smile upon his lips

The pain between her hips

Dejection

And then rejection

From Momma’s real man

Unable, refusing to understand

Momma did the best she could

See children, from evil came good

Have no fear

Momma loves you dear

Cept every day when she sees your eyes blue

It cuts as if raped anew

But Jesus never done no sin

And look what they did to him

My God, My God why have you forsaken me?

Momma understands that totally

Too well

All the truths of hell

But there’s victory, have no fear

In the one who can hear

Words that have never been uttered

For the heart is discovered

And Momma’s heart is devoted to her children

After all we’re all conceived in sin

Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark

A day when heaven closes their windows

It was the grandest of the grandest shows

The moon and stars played electric guitars

The hippies and yippies gathered on mars

It was a perfect dark nothing less nothing more

It was a perfect dark an end to the endless war

Colors faded into the inevitable black

It was a perfect dark and baby I want you back

Dreams are shadows and life ain’t really real

I missed with my sweet kiss you’re the ideal

The gin makes my head spin I’m too far gone

Baby give me some love to lean upon

It was a perfect dark nothing less nothing more

It was a perfect dark an end to the endless war

Colors faded into the inevitable black

It was a perfect dark and baby I want you back

Where is God when the bombs destroy

As bankers laugh in strip bars in mocking joy

Sorry Darwin has some laws that we must enforce

They don’t apply to us you know of course

Eggs for breakfast with coffee black and strong

In the perfect dark please play me this song

We’ll walk to the well of infinity

Darling I dare you take that plunge with me

It was a perfect dark nothing less nothing more

It was a perfect dark an end to the endless war

Colors faded into the inevitable black

It was a perfect dark and baby I want you back

So lonely Joni plays only sad chords

Miracles of wonder fall under the words

Night goes on but there are rumors of dawn

I walked plucking the weeds from our garden

It was a perfect dark nothing less nothing more

It was a perfect dark an end to the endless war

Colors faded into the inevitable black

It was a perfect dark and baby I want you back
