Heaven
I hitchhiked the Blue Ridge Mountains West Virginia style
I road all through Tennessee making a salesman smile
Marching in Idaho next to the Clear Water River
I believed in the Lord it’s easy for Him to deliver
When I hold you close
That’s when I love you most
Heaven is not when I pray
Heaven is when you stay
Well I traded my rough and rowdy ways for some religion
My grand reward for picking up the sword manic depression
Twenty years old I felt that life had reached the end
And you never visited and I thought you were a friend
When I hold you close
That’s when I love you most
Heaven is not when I pray
Heaven is when you stay
I may have been saved but I was lost as a blind eagle
I was driving blue cabs hustling in every way legal
Quit taking the yellow pills I trusted in God’s healing
Back to the psych ward what a terrible feeling
When I hold you close
That’s when I love you most
Heaven is not when I pray
Heaven is when you stay
And they preach Jesus from the pulpit straight from the
heart
They preach Jesus from the pulpit they get paid for their
part
I ain’t cynical but the good Lord don’t want me to be a fool
If you search inside the church you’re gonna find the cruel
I’ve walked the streets telling God’s plan
Been mocked and ridiculed by an angry man
Trying to teach the love of Jesus to the Sioux
John Chivington there’s a good reason to hate you
When I hold you close
That’s when I love you most
Heaven is not when I pray
Heaven is when you stay
