I Sung the Blues
Momma was a Baptist holy as
can be
Papa was a drunk loved his
whiskey
How they’d fight scream and
shout
Couldn’t stand it just one
way out
I sung the blues
It came from my heart
I sung the blues
Surviving was an art
Momma had good news
Papa had his views
And me
I sung the blues
Well daddy drifted in and out
Momma did her best I had no
doubt
Scrubbing floors and cooking
meals
I learned real young how
hunger feels
I sung the blues
It came from the soul
I sung the blues
Music took control
Momma worked like hell
Papa never did well
And me
I sung the blues
Church was packed on my
saddest day
Good Lord Jesus took my momma
away
They say God He’s full of
Love so kind
Why’d he take momma and leave
me behind
I sung the blues
Louder than the choir
I sung the blues
I was a blazing fire
Momma went to glory
Poppa was out of the story
And me
I sung the blues
So here I am close your eyes
to see
Music is a healer come to set
you free
In my voice, I rejoice, it’s
my choice
You can’t touch my song and
make it wrong
Life ain’t easy we all pay
our dues
I got sorrow to borrow I sing
the blues
I sing the blues
On the radio
I sing the blues
On the t.v. show
Momma I miss
Papa thanks for this
Cause of you
I sung the blues
